Excerpt: A National Conversation on American Pluralism and Identity
SSR: Writing, editing
This conversation starter asks participants to share their backgrounds and explore how our different heritages have enriched life in the United States.
Each participant brings a photograph of an older member of his or her family, tribe, or community who has influenced the participant. The photograph can be from any time in that person's life.
The participants then take turns talking about the person in the photograph and what this person means to him or her.
Some questions you might address:
Where did the person come from? What was his or her way of life when young? How has this way of life changed over the years? What values has this person shared with you? Did such sharing affect your values?
Participants might make an informal exhibit of the photographs or objects in a community center or library. A photograph of the exhibit could be published in a community newspaper or magazine.
