Our job

Work closely with the special assistants to the NEH chairman to shape the content of the kit. SSR interviewed experts around the country, wrote the handbook, wrote or substantively edited the 17 conversation ice-breakers, researched photographs, and acquired reproduction permissions. The other materials in the kit were essays from leading scholars, a pamphlet of historic documents, and a reading and film list. Integrating feedback from consultants across the country and the highest levels of NEH, we helped NEH's project manager assess the materials for balance and integrity. We also monitored the NEH designer's work.

Working from page proofs, the Washington Post wrote a laudatory editorial about the National Conversation on American Pluralism and Identity. Thus, as the kit rolled off the presses, requests for the materials were already pouring in from all over the country.
