Excerpt: The Life of a Ship
SSR: Writing, editing, and management
a. Feasibility Studies and Concept Design
The designer applies knowledge and imagination, taking requirements into account. The outline of the ship takes shape. Advanced Marine developed much of the concept design of a Navy tanker T-AO to be operated by civilian crews, establishing the hull form, hydrostatic properties, and general and machinery arrangement. Weight and power analyses and a preliminary cost estimate were also prepared.
b. Preliminary and Contract Design
With the concept design agreed on, further details can be resolved in preliminary design. Hull shape, internal structure, and layout are firmed up and the original concept refined. This leads directly to contract design: determination of sufficient detail so that bids can be sought for construction.
Advanced Marine supported the CG-47 Program Office in system engineering and integration, margin and design budget allocation, and ship specification development for the Ticonderoga. AME also generated the first computer-based arrangement drawings ever used in U.S. Navy procurementspecifically for the CG-49 contract award.
