Investing in Our Children

1. Pregnancy and the Newborn

Prenatal care or treatment right after birth can avert many birth defects. Abstinence from alcohol during pregnancy prevents fetal alcohol syndrome. Taking folic acid very early in pregnancy may reduce the risk of spina bifida. Through a special diet for the child, the effects of phenylketonuria, a genetic disorder that could cause mental retardation, can be cut short.
